On the first day at Imperial College London, Dr Hoang Nguyen was lucky to be in the same lift as Prof. John Burland, a geotechnical engineer—the person who stabilised the Tower of Pisa. Prof. John Burland is a giant in the field who has inspired many generations of engineers and researchers working in geomechanics.
